Get some facts straight

I had a conversation the other day with someone, and I mentioned that I spent a few years in Africa. This person was totally shocked and told me her view of Africa. This is not the first time I have people asking me stupid questions like "How many times a day did I see a lion?" or "Are there showers there?"

The blame should be put on the media I guess for only showing what they do on TV so I understand that unexperienced travellers may think so but it is pretty annoying so let me put the record straight once in for all!

  1. Africa is not a country, it is a continent
  2. African is not a language
  3. There are Africans who do speak English. English is even the national language in some places
  4. It is not only dust and mud
  5. Not everyone is poor. There are people with more many than anyone can dream off
  6. Modern technology does exist there
  7. Africa does not have to become like a western country in order to develop
  8. The people there do everything they can to help themselves. We are not Africa's heroes
  9. Not every one has AIDS
  10. There are not only mud houses in the savannah
  11. The parties in Africa are the best! The people are not boring and depressing
